Will Barcelona be crowned king of La Liga?
It is still too early to make any decisions regarding the 2019-2020 season of Spanish La Liga, but this is a question that is in every fan’s mind right now, due to the uncertainty of what’s going on in the country right now, due to the Covid-19 crisis. The initial guideline has always been to resume as soon as possible and go on with the season; however, Spain has been one of the countries that has been hit the hardest so far, and everything is in the air right now, when it comes to sports.
Some of the most important soccer stadiums are actually being used as medical centers right now, like the Santiago Bernabeu stadium in Madrid, home to Real Madrid, as well as others, which have been offered by teams to be able to allocate patients or medical supplies for the emergency. We all want to see sports back, that’s for sure, but safety and health come first, and so, we still must be patient and do our part in helping others during this time of crisis.
These are La Liga numbers when the season stopped
A total of 27 games per team were played when La Liga officials decided to stop the competition. As usual, there was a tight race between the two biggest teams of the league, Barcelona and Real Madrid. In fact, Real Madrid was leading the league until the day that the actions stopped. Zidane’s team was on top with 56 points, while Barcelona was second, with 55; however, Real Madrid lost to Real Betis in their last game, 1-2, while Barcelona beat Real Sociedad and went up to 58 points.
Sevilla, in the third spot, is way behind, with a total of 47 points, followed by Real Sociedad, Getafe and Atletico Madrid, all in European tournament spots for next season.
If the season were to be called right now, there are two options, one is to declare it abandoned, and the other is to give the championship to the leader so far, which is Barcelona. There are different opinions on this, as there are obvious interests for each team, but as things are right now, no team would probably even care what happens. The situation is so complex right now in Spain that the focus is set on getting well, flattening the curve and hopefully, going back to normal as soon as possible.
